Build a Life By Design:
A Simple Practice to Lead with Intention
by Stephen Seidel | Co-Founder, Gents Journey
What would happen if you wrote down exactly what you wanted?
Ten years ago, I had just started my own agency. On paper, I was the boss, but in reality, I felt isolated and lonely in my entrepreneurial journey.
So I hired a coach because men’s groups weren’t as readily available. Before we talked strategy, she had me write down what I wanted.
One line read: Buy a 2,000+ square-foot house with a fence and a yard by 2020.
In November 2020, we moved into that house. I had completely forgotten I wrote it down.
That’s what journaling does. It gets it out of your head, onto the page, and into your reality. Research from Dominican University found people are 42% more likely to hit goals just by writing them down.
I wrote 10 goals that year. Almost every one came true. New house. 10 clients booked. A podcast sold.
Jim Rohn put it, “We all have two choices: we can make a living, or we can design a life.”
Most of us have mastered making a living …
But have you designed your life?
You can start doing this in under 10 minutes. Let’s go!
YOUR SEVEN STEPS
Choose your pillar
Set your goal
See it
Make it a habit
Tell someone
Set your reward
Get started
1. Choose your pillar
Sit in silence for a moment. Check in with your mind, body, and spirit.
Chances are, one area of your life has been running on empty or getting depleted, while you’ve been busy taking care of everything else.
At Gents Journey, we build on seven pillars of manhood:
Family
Friendship
Fun
Focus
Fitness
Freedom
Faith
Open up a notebook or a note on your phone. Write down the one pillar that needs you the most right now.
For Example: If you’ve been meaning to get back in the gym, write “Fitness.”
2. Set your goal
“First say to yourself what you would be, and then do what you have to do.” - Epictetus
Choose one goal in that pillar. Make it S.M.A.R.T.:
Specific: Say exactly what you want.
Measurable: Use a real number.
Achievable: Stretch, but stay honest.
Relevant: It should matter to this pillar (and you).
Time-bound: Give it a date.
Keep it to one sentence. Here are a few Fitness examples:
